Interview with DragonBall's Luis Arrieta

September 6, 2008

By: Son Goshin

Hoy Cinema recently had the opportunity to talk with Luis Arrieta who will be playing Weaver (not Teto, weaver) in the upcoming Dragonball live action movie.  Thanks to forum member Fogdark for the heads up.

Apparently, Arrieta says that his role is not as importnat as people ahve speculated.  Supposedly, Weaver was to be somewhat of a "replacement" for Krillin, or Goku's best friend.  According to Weaver, he only spent one day of shooting while in Durango, meaning his role is very limited.  To see the entire interview translated (albeit, by Google) click HERE.

You can discuss this over on our Forums.

Two New Interviews with Dragonball's Jamie Chung

September 5, 2008

By: LiveActionVegeta

IGN has put up an interview with Jamie Chung about Samurai Girl and Dragonball.  Below is what she had to say about her experience with Dragonball.

IGN: Dragonball has such a huge following. Were you aware of it beforehand?

Chung: I'm so scared… I grew up watching Dragonball. Are you kidding me? I love it! So, to play Chi Chi, the girl that I admired, is kind of crazy. I kind of wanted to be Bulma, but Emmy Rossum is perfect for Bulma. She really fits the character essence and everything.

IGN: What was the shoot like?

Chung: It was awesome. A major motion picture and a TV schedule is so different and the budget's are so different, and the magic that you can make happen is amazing.

IGN: Were you able to take any of the things you'd learned on Samurai Girl and use them in Dragonball?

Chung: Oh, yeah. And I learned even more on Dragonball and I brought it to Samurai Girl. It was great!

IGN: What was it like working with your costars in Dragonball?

Chung: They're brilliant actors. Emmy, only being 21, is an absolute pro. She knows what she's doing, she's absolutely gorgeous – she's stunning. And she's dedicated. I was in awe of her beauty. James Marsters has a huge following, but he's so down to Earth. He's a method actor and he's fantastic. He's the perfect Piccolo. I know they won't show it to you, but the makeup they did and the mask took three hours to do, and he looks insane. They were very picky and particular on how he was going to look. Justin Chatwin is a pro. Not only does he fit the character internally -- he has Goku's essence -- but he looks like a cartoon character! With his big, blue eyes, he looks like Japanese anime!

IGN: What are your outfits like in Dragonball?

Chung: Lots of boobies. I mean, it fits my character name, you know?

IGN: [Laughs] What was your reaction seeing the costume?

Chung: I'm like, "You want me to look wholesome and you want me to wear pants and not show leg, and yet I have Chi Chis!"

Also Variety Japan interviewed her on her role as well. The interview is in Japanese, but over at dbthemovie they have the full article translated.  Head over there to check it out, but here's a snippit.

Jamie Chung, she appeared at the interview room in very high tension. As soon as she found out I was Japanese, she asked me the question, “Is it true that all Dragonball characters names derive from the name of vegetables?” The name of the Saiyan is so, I explained, she said “Well, what does Chi-chi mean in Japanese? Shooting place in Mexico, the crew spoke Spanish, all of them laughed when they called my name Chi-chi, I asked why they were laughing, they said that Chi-chi means boobs in Spanish!” I was surprised, in fact almost the same meaning in Japanese, when I told her it, “No!” She was shocked and put her hands on her head, but she rebound quickly, and showed an impish smile.

She is 25-years-old, a Korean American who was born and raised in San Francisco. The family lived in the Japan Town, She grew up surrounded by Japanese culture. The city where anime events are often held is her playground, Jamie says “Dragon Ball” and “Hello Kitty” is her Idol.

Two More Dragonball Screencaps

September 4, 2008

By: LiveActionVegeta

Hey everyone. A couple more screencaps from the Dragonball trailer have surfaced. Similar to the Piccolo one, these are just basically a couple of title cards for Goku and Master Roshi. Not exactly the most original or creative thing to do in a trailer but here they are.

IMAGES REMOVED

I hope the keying looks a little better in motion than it does in these stills.

Dragonball Trailer Screencaps + Piccolo!

September 2, 2008

By: LiveActionVegeta

Hey folks! Good day for news today. And right at the last few minutes before midnight comes some great new pics from the Dragonball movie! Some screencaps of the trailer and the first image of Piccolo. Photos originated over at nerdorama.cl:

IMAGES REMOVED

Am I the only one that thinks Piccolo looks more like Jim Carrey as The Mask? Or what was the bad guy's name, Dorian?

And anyone else notice the DragonBall style looks very similar to that OLD OLD poster from a while back.  The "all they need is seven" poster.  I think it was the one designed off the Tomb Raider globe thingy.

So what do you think of the pictures?  We know you have an opinion!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles... LIVE ACTION!

September 2, 2008

By: LiveActionVegeta

Now I know what you're thinking.  "Heeeeey, you're Live Action Anime, what's Ninja Turtles doing on here?" Well there's some Japanese influence... yeah that's it... And I'm sure there's been a Ninja Turtles manga at some point and there's ninjas, yeah yeah....  and there's ninjas!  Yeah that's the ticket!  There's ninjas and .... look it's news of a LIVE ACTION NINJA TURTLES MOVIE!!!!

IGN reported today that Warner Brothers and Imagi plan on moving forward with the TMNT franchise after the success of the animated film.  Not with an animated sequel though, but a LIVE ACTION movie!.

Director of TMNT Kevin Eastman had this to say:

"Yes, it is true. Although the CGI film did well enough to warrent a sequel, there has been much talk between Imagi and Warners to do a better "re-invention" (newest Hollywood buzzword) of the TMNT's, in a live action film--like what was done with Batman. Back to basics, back to the origin and the intro of the Shredder, etc...there have been talks, trips to Northampton to talk to Mr Laird, and discussions with the original "first" TMNT film director Steve Barron to come back and do it right--but no official word yet...will keep you posted. Best, Kevin"

So there you have it.  The buzz on this says 2010 or 2011 release date.  So there's something to look forward too.  Again I know this isn't anime but I think enough can respect the sheer awesomeness of news of a new series of Live Action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!

LAA EXCLUSIVE: Interview with Dragonball's Shavon Kirksey!

August 31, 2008

By: LiveActionVegeta

Recently I had the pleasure of speaking with Shavon Kirksey, whom you all may know is playing the character of Emi in the upcoming live action Dragonball movie. I asked her a few questions about her character and her experiences on the movie. Here's a quick snippet:

LAA: How did you get involved with Dragonball? Was there an audition process or were you called in?

Shavon: Yes, I got a call from my agency telling me to check my email because I have an audition for the Dragonball live action movie. So first I read on tape with the casting director, John Papsidera, then went to callbacks. The very next day my agent and manager called me telling me I booked it and that I am leaving for Mexico soon! I was so excited!! This is my first role in a film and I got to film out of the country! How fun is that?

LAA: Sounds like a lot! In the movie you play a character named Emi. Fans have been curious about this character as she is new to the Dragonball universe. What can you tell us about her role in the film and about her character in general?

Shavon: Well, my character was made up for the film. Emi and Chi Chi are best friends in the movie. We are the “it” girls on our high school campus, and we only like to hang out with other popular kids and the football players, so we can maintain our popular image. Everyone wants to be in our circle but emi wont allow it unless she thinks your cool enough [laughs]. But emi is a cool down to earth girl and she’s very smart, but she just wants everyone to see her as the perfect popular girl.

And the director of Voltron is...

August 28, 2008

By: LiveActionVegeta

Max Makowski?

Apparently so. LatinoReview's El Mayimbe broke the news:

"I’m told he's on every studio's hot list these days because of some Sundance movie he made a few years ago about warring assassins called ONE LAST DANCE. I was also told it's like having Zach Snyder do 300. Max is supposed to have a great visual style that's very specific and all his own."

He's also directing the remake of Kung Fu!

Check out the Live Action Kodomo no Kodomo trailer

August 28, 2008

By: LiveActionVegeta

Ran across this trailer today on cinemacafe.net. It's the live action Kodomo no Kodomo (Child of a Child).   Unfortunately the trailer is not subtitled and it's in Japanese.  So while some of us might not know what they're saying, the cinematography is very nice to look at.

Check it out here!

The film is adapted from the Japanese manga of the same name.  It's about an 11-year-old girl named Haruna who becomes unexpectedly pregnant.  You might recognize the similarity in theme to the recent American film Juno. While Juno dealt with a 16 year old pregrency, the idea of an 11 year old girl being pregnant seems a little more... shocking.  And probably isn't a topic seen too often.  Which might just make the film that much more interesting.

It release in Japanese theaters on September 27th.  Hopefully we'll get the dvd here in the states.

Bob Orci Answers Question on Transformers and Casting On AFB

August 25, 2008

By: LiveActionVegeta

Over at TFW2005, Bob Orci (screenwriter) has been answering lots of questions from fans regarding the upcoming movie.   Here's some of the questions.

Q. Will Optimus have a trailer in this film, and will it transform? Will we see Roller, and if so, is it apart of Prime like his profile states or a separate being? Will Roller have a robot form?

A. We've talked about the trailer many times. I can say nothing more than that.

Q. Will these alien robots, the evil ones in particular, get some color variation? All/mostly silver/grey made it difficult to tell who was who the first time watching the film at times, so color or a glowing purple insignia would be nice.

A. Yes

There's more questions and answers but they're kind of spread about the thread. CLICK HERE to go directly to the page where I got these questions from.  From there you can search about.

If you find anything cool let us know on our Transfomers forum!

Also in Transformers news, the AirForceTimes tells us that a casting call took place on Holloman Air Force Base last week for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

"Parts of “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” are set to be filmed in Alamogordo, N.M., home to Holloman. Scenes from the first “Transformers” were shot at Holloman in 2006 and featured aircraft such as the CV-22 Osprey and MH-53 Pave Low.

"About 200 people will be hired as extras to portray military members,” Maryellen Aviano, extras casting coordinator for DreamWorks Pictures, said in an Air Force news release."
